Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's advisor on strategic communications. As White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Mercedes Schlapp has to face a variety of challenges. The president is his own director of communications. There are numerous legal matters which could impact messaging strategies. And Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversy. Schlapp, however, has never lost focus on her role. She is in close contact in conjunction with White House political affairs and committees on legislation as well as policy shops and the wider communications team to ensure that the policies are implemented. In her current position she's focused on several issues including school safety and opioids. The reporter doesn't get to interact often in her current job. The month of March was when she received plenty of press attention after her name came up as a possible candidate in the race to replace Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job as White House's strategist for communications. The White House's strategic communications adviser must deal numerous legal issues which could affect the communication strategy of the administration, as well as Cabinet secretaries involved in scandals of their own. Schlapp has kept her eye on the target, and has been coordinating policies with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop in addition to broader communication. In the beginning, she has focused on school safety issues, addiction infrastructure, trade and drug issues. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters often in her current position. However, she attracted a lot of interest in March, after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It hasn't been an easy fight. The allies of Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is one of the other candidates for the post have been fighting over the media. Schlapp claimed that after that the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she had a conversation with him.
